Conservation Tips

Affordable Water

Water is a precious resource that's affordable, too. Tap water continues to be one of the only items that can be purchased for under one cent per gallon.

You can refill an 8 oz glass of water approximately 15,000 times for the same cost as a six-pack of soda.

A dairy cow must drink four gallons of water to produce one gallon of milk.

Other liquid commodities are much more costly!
Cost per gallon:
Chanel No. 5 Parfum: $45, 056
Visine Advanced Eye Drops: $741.12
Pepto-Bismol: $58.52
Evian bottled water: $21.19
Corona beer: $12.89
Coca-Cola: $2.64

Buy Local!

Support your local economy and save fuel when you buy local foods and products. Missouri's AgriMissouri program, Clickhere can provide a variety of options.

Conserve in the House

Turn off the water while you brush your teeth and save four gallons a minute. That's 200 gallons each week for a family of four!

Conserve in the Yard and Garden

On average, 50% - 70% of household water is used outdoors for watering lawns and gardens. Make the most of the water you use outdoors by never watering at the hottest times of the day or when it's windy. Turn off sprinklers when it's raining. Plant low-water use grasses, shrubs, and native plants to reduce your lawn watering by 20% - 50%.

Design and Decoration

Eco-chic! Consider natural, responsibly crafted materials in your furniture and finishes. Examples include vegetable-dyed jute wallpapers, hemp drapery fabric and salvaged wood for furniture and floors. Some luxe furniture companies are opting for soy-based or recycled cushioning and water-based finishes.

Fresh and Clean

Get down and dirty with low-impact product for home and body. Look for household products that substitute petrochemicals like butyl cellosolve, ammonia, chlorine bleach and sodium hydroxide with gentler but equally effective enzymes, vinegar and vegetable-based products. Ditto with body products that skip harsh sulfates and artificial preservatives. Even better, bio-dynamic ingredients that are both grown organically and harvested when believed to be most potent.

Saving Energy

Save energy and money! Pull out cords for cell-phone charges, microwaves and other "occasional" appliances when not in use.

Sleep Better

Today's green bedroom accessories ensure a comfy, wholesome and handsome retreat. Choose green cottons tinted with low-impact dyes for bedding and lingerie. And don't forget to turn down the thermostat. Doing so saves money and helps you rest better. Studies show cooler temps help you fall asleep more quickly and sleep deeper. For every degree you lower your thermostat between 70 and 60 degrees, you'll save about 5% on your heating costs.
