Trailside Nature Center

99th and Holmes
Kansas City, Missouri
(south of the fire station)
Project Started: May, 2006
After one year, the rain garden plants have matured and filled in nicely.

The rain garden design is located at the end of a 15 inch drain pipe which collects runoff from 33% of the fire station roof. The garden is about 540sf in size and was installed with 4 inches of engineered soil (50% sand, 50% topsoil/compost) spread across the garden. The plant list includes 12 plant species including false dragon's head, black-eyed susan and blue flag iris. Switch grass was installed at the start of the rain garden to knock down the velocity of runoff entering the garden and provides a nice backdrop to the flowering plants.

Project was installed by volunteers from the Blue River Watershed Association, BNIM Architects, Historical Society of New Santa Fe, KC Parks and Recreation and USGS.

Project was designed by BNIM Architects.
