KC Habitat ReStore Participates in 10,000 Rain Gardens Initiative

From Kansas City Star

State Street Bank partners with KC Habitat ReStore to create rain garden.

On Friday, June 8, 2007 beginning at 9:00 a.m. 16 volunteers from State Street Bank will descend on the front yard of KC Habitat ReStore, located at 4701 Deramus Ave. in Kansas City, to assist ReStore director, Don Reck, in planting ReStore's 400 square foot rain garden. As part of the 10,000 Rain Gardens initiative and in accordance with ReStore community and environmental focus, State Street Bank graciously agreed to fund this ambitious project.

"Part of the ReStore mission is to educate the public about environmental conservation issues", states Reck. "This garden will divert rain water runoff from our 33,000 square foot roof to the garden, therefore reducing the amount of water that will flow into the city sewer system. We are able to create a beautiful garden with hundreds of native plants that everyone can enjoy and help protect our community's natural resources. I am proud that ReStore will be part of the solution to rain water runoff issues."

The ReStore rain garden will consist of 1.5 tons of river rock, more than 300 native plants and seven yards of mulch and will be clearly visible to any visitors to ReStore.
